Morlees is located at 160 Newark Ave. where Bay and Erie streets intersect. The store, which took its name from a combination of original owner Morton Lee's first and middle names, has grown over the years -- initially offering suits and casual-wear.
In the early 1980’s the store became the first Nike account in Jersey City and today, in addition to selling clothes for woman and children, Morlees offers numerous brands including The North Face, Patagonia, Hunter, Uggs, Frye, Crocs, Native, Mackage, Nobis, Red Wing Heritage and Stride Rite.
From famous hip-hop artists to professional basketball players, social activists and boxing champions, Morlees has also seen its share of big names pop into the store over its past 50 years. "Our customers have included Crazy Legs, Naughty by Nature, Ludacris, Queen Latifah, Keith Herring, Mark Medal, Jerry Walker, Rodrick Rhodes, Bobby and Danny Hurley and many politicians.
The store took a hard hit when Morton Lee died in 2007, followed by his partner and nephew Lenny in 2011. It is currently owned and operated by their surviving family.
